About the Role
The Officer – Community Affairs plays an essential role in safeguarding company leases and easements, supporting peaceful community relations, and maintaining workplace health, safety, and environmental standards.
Key / Major Accountabilities
This position is responsible for day-to-day community liaison and supporting company commitments to landowners and stakeholders. Responsibilities include:
Community Liaison – Act as the immediate link between communities and the company, addressing daily issues and relaying information clearly and without bias.
Compensation Management – Mediate disputes, agree on compensation distribution, and assist with payments while ensuring fairness and transparency.
Conflict Resolution – Proactively identify emerging community issues, mediate disputes, and maintain positive, stable relations.
Cultural & Project Support – Assist with cultural matters, supervise local field labour, and support delivery of company-funded community projects.
Awareness & Communication – Provide accurate updates on community developments and company operations through awareness programs.
Compliance & Safety – Uphold workplace safety, environmental standards, voluntary principles on security and human rights, and anti-fraud policies.
Flexibility – Be prepared to respond to community issues outside standard working hours when required.
About You
To be successful in this role, you will be a respected community member with strong cultural knowledge, mediation skills, and experience working closely with landowners and local stakeholders. You will also bring:
Minimum Grade 10 education (not compulsory), with literacy in English and Tok Pisin.
Relevant experience in fieldwork or a similar community-facing role.
Strong public speaking (oratory), mediation, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills.
Vast local knowledge and understanding of both traditional and contemporary land administration.
Awareness of local, provincial, and national government operations in PNG.
Ability to maintain confidentiality, professionalism, and cultural sensitivity.
Strong relationship-building skills and the ability to manage tense or potentially volatile situations.
Sound computer literacy (MS Word and Excel) and knowledge of occupational health and safety practices.
